O Ma R's Report
Sunday, November 22, 1998
Sunday we headed to the Aguan Valley until the road disappeared in Isletas, close to Sava. The Aguan River tore the road and three bridges up badly; it's going to be a major operation to rebuild the road there. That area was also a prime banana plantation of Standard Fruit Company, and it is now a complete shambles! One of the small bridges has gotten covered with banana rubble, and new banana plants have sprouted all over the bridge. Hopefully the pics we took will turn out well.
Nonetheless, Hurricane Mitch apparently did not damage the old road through Planes, Sonaguera and Ilanga - so all the traffic headed to Trujillo, Tocoa and Sava is now headed through there. Reportedly Olanchito is also accessible through this route, so it seems that the area has finally been completely penetrated.
We also came upon a large contingent (about 190 people plus numerous vehicles, including helicopters and land transport) sent down by the Canadian government from Ontario. They came down a week ago via the airport in La Ceiba in Hercules C-130 transport planes. This contingent consists of soldiers, engineers, medics and other professionals. They have set up a base in Sonaguera and receive supplies daily from the La Ceiba airport. They also have a medical facility set up down the road a little ways from the main base camp. They will be down in the area for at least a month, to help fulfill the needs of the Aguan Valley. WE HERE AT HONDURAS.COM WISH TO SEND A VERY SPECIAL "WELCOME TO HONDURAS!!" TO THESE NEW CANADIAN FRIENDS (and hope they will be able to make it back to their families for Christmas).
